President Obama predicts more states will look at legalizing marijuana

(post submitted by Chris Thompson of Purdue NORML)

Hey Indiana Activists!

A few days ago, President Barack Obama predicted that more states will continue to legalize marijuana in his live interview with Youtube..

After a question by host Hank Green, President Obama said “What you’re seeing now is Colorado, Washington, through state referenda, they’re experimenting with legal marijuana. The position of my administration has been that we still have federal laws that classify marijuana as an illegal substance, but we’re not going to spend a lot of resources trying to turn back decisions that have been made at the state level on this issue. My suspicion is that you’re gonna see other states start looking at this.”

Obama also discussed the shift from focusing on drug use as a criminal problem, to that of a public health problem that requires treatment rather than incarceration. Considering that the United States has 5% of the world’s population, yet we has 25% of the world’s prisoners, this is definitely a needed shift.

This is a good step forward for the legalization movement, and we’re excited to hopefully see states like Nevada, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada be on the ballot for legalization in 2015!

And hopefully, we’ll see Indiana pass some sort of medical marijuana bill in the next legislative session! Remember to follow SB284 and the other medical marijuana bills going through the Indiana State Congress!
